TWU to strike again in Redlands Shire

Transport Workers Union (TWU) members will again strike in the Redlands Shire from 4am until 8am on Friday 12 August 2011.

Veolia Transport has been negotiating an enterprise agreement with Independent Bargaining Agents and the TWU. Last week an agreement was finalised that would see drivers receive an annual 4 % wage increase over the next 3 years – representing a cumulative increase, including other negotiated benefits, of 13.9% for the average driver.

“The union’s strike actions are extremely disappointing. Only last week we finalised a deal that would see drivers receive a generous increase in wages and other benefits. We just want to finalise the agreement for our employees and get on with providing bus services for our community,” said Colin Jennings, Managing Director for Veolia Transport in Queensland.

The last negotiation meeting was held on Friday, 5 August. Officials from the TWU did not attend this or the previous scheduled meeting, held on Wednesday 3 August. The claim was that there were no full-time officials suitable or available to attend the meetings.

“The TWU’s behaviour over the last few months has been especially disappointing when we have been making progress throughout the negotiation process,” Mr Jennings said.

The current offer maintains Veolia Transport as paying the highest ordinary hourly rate of all the private bus operators in  South East Queensland.
